    Opal pattern review

The pattern worked great to make my granddaughter a pair of Raya pants. I used the front panel to make the "skirt" portion of the pants and didn't add pockets. She loved it and will wear it on an upcoming Disney cruise.

    Opal pants

As a beginner the sew-along-videos helped alot. Love my new pants and think next time I will use a material with a little bit strech of in it.

    Very nice, so many options

I like this pattern. It is just what I needed - elasticated waistband, which is comfy, and so many different leg styles. I already made shorts, next are wide leg pants. In the future I want to make tapered leg too. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. Thank You! I love Your patterns!

The instructions great. Good fit too, I made the size 14 my measurements of 33W: 40H. I was looking for a relaxed fitting pair of trousers and these fit the bill perfectly!

    Small changes, big impact

For a more tailored Opal, I sized down (two sizes) but cut the crotch depth and elastic for the size that matches my measurements. I also added back darts, same as the Flint's. These easy changes gave me the hip ease I prefer (3-4 inches) and a better backside fit. I made two pairs, one with a paper-bag waist and another without, and I’m super pleased with both. Megan Nielsen's pants patterns are some of my favorites!

    Easy and Intuitive Pattern

I loved this pattern. The instructions are clear and the fitting is perfect. It's a very easy project that can be completed in one day, perfect for novice sewists.
I made a size 6, view A and omitted the belt and belt loops.

    Just what I wanted!

The Opal pattern came out just as I had hoped. I used a mid-weight linen for the tapered version shortened to knee length to make smart shorts for work. I used the best fit size according to the chart and included the paper bag waistband and belt, and they're perfect! Smart enough for work but comfy enough that I will dress them down on weekends too. Will make more both shorts and full length for sure. Sorry the photo isn't great.

    Love these!

I am blown away by how much I love these pants - I made the paper bag waist version and sized down one size based on other reviews (glad I did, but sizing down 2 sizes would’ve been too small). I made these as a comfortable WFH pant option that looks cute but is still elastic and they’re perfect for that. If I used a nicer/fancier fabric I would even wear them into the office. I will definitely be making more. I’m starting on a version of view B this week :)

    Comfy and relaxed pants!

I had so much fun sewing the Opal pants. I made view B and added the side pockets. I also added the belt loops and was so happy with them I made a belt! The sew-along was very helpful.
Thank you so much Megan for your patterns.

    Easy fitting shorts

I really enjoyed sewing these shorts. Easy to follow instructions, with really clear detail. I made the shorts version with normal waistband and they were easy to fit. I love the belt with belt loops, pockets and wide leg. Super comfortable! I will make again and try the tapered pants version.

    Love this Pattern

I absolutely love a paperbag waist! I used a viscose linen for my make and they are probably the most comfy trousers I've worn. The instructions were really easy to follow so definitely beginner friendly. I'm in between a size 6-8 but I made a size 4 for a slightly less baggy fit and I love it. I can't wait to make many more!

Great pants with a lovely design feature of paperbag waist!

I’m possibly a little ‘biased’ in my review here, since I was fortunate enough to be a tester for this pattern. But I do love them! I chose to make the paperbag waist, long pant version. I used a fluid, well-draping tencel in an onyx colour, which I then detailed with white top stitching. I am long waisted and have shorter legs by proportion, and at 5’2” tall, I worried about the extra feature at my waistline. However, it seems to work and corrects my proportions nicely, giving the illusion ( I think!) of longer legs!
Pattern is easy to follow, with great instruction. I look forward to making the shorts soon, for our approaching summer.

    Opal Pants and Shorts

I just finished the Opal pants pattern and am really happy with it. I have a hard time finding pants/slacks that fit my petite frame but these sure do! I made them out of rayon batik and they are just what I wanted. Thanks for the great pattern!

Love this pattern - and easy for a beginner

I’ve only made a few garments (I just started seeing 3 months ago). This has been, by far, my most successful sew. I didn’t make any mistakes (yay me! But also the directions were clear enough for me to follow). I did kinda size down (chose the smaller size between two) and it was the right choice. I used linen and it looks great. I’m making a second pair using a vintage polyester suit fabric and extending the paper bag waist to be more prominent. So far so good!

Lovely shorts - made UK size 18

I picked the size for my measurements and made some summer shorts and they came out really well in a tencel - very versatile smart or casual pattern.
The length / pocket / waistband options are all great and it looks like it would be easy to make adjustments to pattern for any fit preferences. The only slight niggle was that there wasn’t any recommendation for how to finish the seams (I ended up flat felling the front and back crotch seams and ironed the side seams open), in the pattern it just says to finish however you like - but this no real issue as beginners and more advanced sewers would have different preferences.
I would say to make sure your elastic is quite firm as mine wasn’t and the paper bag effect isn’t as pronounced as it could be.
All in all, looks great, sizing was good for me with no adjustments, will make again.
