Tania Culottes pattern

I used this pattern to creat beach pajamas for a 1920’s Lawn Party and boy were they a _delight_ to dance in! Super flattering, whether standing, lounging on a picnic blanket, or doing the Charleston! Super comfortable and incredibly flattering! (Plus, went together in an afternoon - what a treat!) Many thanks - this is about to be a major staple in my day-to-day wardrobe! (For reference, I added 9” to the midi length and switched the side closure from a zipper to buttons)

Fabric: lightweight 100% cotton (lawn??)
Would I make again? Yes! contemplating a denim version? Maybe a wool for winter?

So, I made these culottes as part of a matching set, which seems all the rage at the moment. The pattern and instructions were quite easy to follow (any parts I needed clarification I just went to YouTube and there are 2 unaffiliated sew-alongs which are helpful), the pattern pieces all matched up perfectly. I chose my measured size, but based on some reviews online the sewers had said they ran small, so I panicked and used a 1cm seam allowance on the side seams on both sides, but unfortunately this made the skirt too big. Will have to take them in to the actual 1.5cm seam allowance. I didn't alter the length, it's a perfect modest mini skirt length for my 167cm body (sorry I don't own a full length mirror for the photo).

My fabric is slightly sheer (in retrospect, not that bad given how loose fitting the outfit is) so I used white cotton for the pocket bags, the waistband facing, and lined the back of the culottes (I figured the giant pockets gave enough coverage at the front). I left the lining about 1.5inches short of the actual hem of the culottes.

The weight of my fabric means it's still a bit dangerous on breezy days, but with my phone in one pocket, and keys in the other, problem solved!

Was looking for a specific vintage pattern which gave the illusion of a skirt but was actually pants. No luck there, but this pattern looks just as good and is silly levels of easy. I've already made two pairs (which garnered me compliments everywhere I went) out of an old curtain and a tapestry I rescued from a friend's bin. I'm on my third pair now, and getting ready to experiment with making them into a sort of pinafore style situation. Not only is the pattern easy to follow but Megan makes it easy to experiment with length and style by giving you such a clean base to work on, only your imagination limits how you can get creative and change it up!

Some readers of my review will perhaps think I’m indelicate but others will hopefully think I’m just broaching a problem many of us face…maybe you’ve guessed already? It’s that horrible feeling of fleshy thighs rubbing together to create chaffing, usually during summer months when I want to dress in cool clothing, for me that means skirts and dresses. I’ve tried wearing shorts underneath my skirts and dresses but that’s another layer and feels restrictive. What could I wear that satisfied my wish to wear skirts but also was practical for my need to stop chaffing? In steps Megan Nielsen with her fantastic pattern the Tania, what is this magic? It looks like a skirt, it truly does. Many similar patterns look like skirts in line drawings but in reality they still look like loose shorts, not this one. Megan has designed so carefully that a circle skirt mirage is created. I cannot express how grateful I am for this pattern during this years U.K heatwave. It drapes beautifully, fits nicely, has easy to follow instructions (as all Megan Nielsen patterns are) prevents the dreaded chaffing and looks like a skirt. Whoohoo! JUST what I wanted. Thank you Megan. All your patterns are great. P.s. I’m wearing the Floreat dress/top with it too. Another firm favourite. 😊

I'm lovin 'it! I premiered it last week. My friends loved it too! They are very comfortable! Next week I will make another one with another fabric!

I really love skirts but always afraid to show my panties to everyone especially during summer when not wearing tights...
Tania is perfect to prevent that and now that i'm a mother and my little girl always pull away my clothes it's even more perfect !

I found this pattern when I did a google search for “culottes pattern” and I am so glad that I decided to give it a try. I LOVE my culottes. I made the short ones in cotton lawn fabric and they came out beautifully. I love wearing skirts and dresses and with the hot weather, I wanted to wear a shorter skirt but with the added modesty that a divided skirt provides over a short skirt in windy weather. I have made clothes with the help of family and friends in the past, so I’m not exactly a beginning stitcher, but this is the first pattern that I made from beginning to end myself. I felt really proud and the instructions held my hand along the way. Also, I used the PDF pattern and printed it on my home printer. I’d never done that before and I found it really simple to do. It takes time to put all of the pages together, of course, but the instructions were really clear about which pages to print for the version I was sewing. And each page was labeled clearly so that I could join the pieces with no problem. I liked this pattern so much that I bought another pattern from Megan Nielsen patterns. I feel really confident about this pattern company and I also like their body-positive and community-supportive attitude. Highly recommended.

I loved the look of this pattern and diverted a cotton linen blend from use as a trouser to these cullottes. Unfortunately the style didn’t suit my rectangle body, there was way too much material between my legs which swishes forward, ruining the lovely flat front (I used the less voluminous view). I have taken quite a few inches out of the rise, inner and outer seams to reduce this bulk. I think the problem arises when one’s waist is a few sizes larger than one’s hips: how di I make a grade change when the pattern is not like a standard pants block?

J’ai beaucoup aimé le patron. Les explications sont très bien. Le seul problème est que l’entre-jambe descend trop. Je ne suis pas très à l’aise pour marcher.

Lovely pattern, and the resulting culottes are flattering to wear. My only wish would be that instead of the invisible zipper there were something more elegant and sturdy, as I think the invisible zipper makes it feel a bit flimsy.

I made a pair of Tania culottes and absolutely loved the entire process from start to finish. It's an excellent pattern with easy to follow instructions. Highly recommended!

Great pattern with lots of support through the sew alongs and other resources. I'm excited to make many pairs of these! They are super comfortable.

These culottes are a quick and easy sew, I made them in a viscose and they are a delight to wear ... I found my new favorite skirt/ trousers pattern!
By the way, I ride my bike to the station every day, then I travel by train and by feet to get at work, these culottes make me feel all dressed up arriving at work while very practical during the shuffle.

Tania Culottes pattern

I found the pattern to be good (I've made the wattle skirt which was perfect) until I got to the waistband. I found it too wide and flimsy to do it's job properly. Not sure if it was due to a poor choice of fabric or too flimsy interfacing. Or maybe it was just a little too advanced for my skill set.

I love the culottes pattern, it fit perfectly straight off the bat, with no size adjustments needed (I think that is a first for me). I only made one small change to the pattern after the mock up and that was to extend the sewing line of the pleat by 1" in the front and back. It sits nicer on my curvy hips and bum that way. the only thing I didn't like about this pattern was the zipper insertion method. I suspect that may have been because I didn't have an invisible zipper? I won't be doing that on my real make. I'll use a different zipper insertion method, because again, I don't have an invisible zipper. I found the instructions very easy to follow, and I liked the little tips dotted throughout the instructions.
